Vacuum weekly to remove soil before it is ground into the foundation. Avoid
vacuuming the fringe, as this will eventually cause it to break off. Spills
should be blotted, not rubbed, before they have a chance to set. Spot
cleaning with cold water and mild soap on water soluble stains can be
attempted. AVOID PET STAINS AT ALL COSTS; they rarely come out. Rugs should
be washed professionally every one to five years, depending upon the wear
they receive.
A good padding not only prevents slipping, it also keeps dust and moisture
away from the rug. Mildew will rot the rug foundation, so avoid storing rugs
in damp basements or crawl spaces. Avoid setting clay flowerpots on rugs;
moisture will seep right through.
Turn rugs occasionally to permit even wear. Don't place the rug where it will
receive prolonged periods of direct sun, which will cause fading. Moths are
only a problem in dark corners or under furniture; vacuum those areas
frequently. Long term storage should include some kind of moth repellant.
Contact a professional rug repairer if the rug develops holes or frayed edges.
